Slow Down to Move Forward:
This is the Reset You need, More Than a New Planner.
If you’ve ever bought a shiny new planner hoping it’ll “fix” your life, THIS time will be different, thinking you will actually use to it's full potential... same, friend (every single year)
But what if the answer isn't another planner, what if its a reset rhythm.
Resets aren’t necessarily about doing more, they’re about slowing down to realign your heart before you realign your schedule. They’re about trading the noise of hustle for the quiet whisper of peace.
Because sometimes, the most productive thing you can do… is pause.
“Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.” — Psalm 116:7
Why Reflection Comes Before Planning
We’re nearly at the end of another year as i write this, and if you’re anything like me, your brain is already jumping between Christmas chaos, school events, and “What’s for dinner?” The idea of sitting down to reflect might sound about as realistic as a spa weekend.... and right now I know which one I would prefer.
But, if we don’t pause long enough to notice how far we’ve come, we risk rushing right past the very moments God meant for us to live in.
Reflection to me isn’t a fluffy self-care ritual, it’s a sacred pause. A moment to look back with gratitude and ask, “God, where were You this year, and what are You showing me next?”
When we skip reflection, we miss the clarity that helps us walk into the next season with peace instead of pressure. We can be so busy fixing problems and taking care of all the things we forget the good that has happened.
The Power of the Pause
We live in a world that glorifies hustle. (sure we are trying to move away from that word but you only have to hear people's packed weeks to know it is alive and well!)
We are conditioned to measure worth and success in productivity.... and I am STILL unravelling that in my own life! But when we slow down, we start to see clearly again.
Taking time to reflect doesn’t mean pressing pause on your responsibilities, it means creating space for perspective.
When you stop long enough to ask:
What worked this year?
What drained me?
What did God teach me?
…you begin to notice the patterns shaping your peace.
You’ll see the routines that brought calm, the friendships that carried you, and the moments God used to grow you, even when life felt messy.
That clarity is gold. It’s what helps you step into the new year, or next season of even the next day, with purpose, not panic.
Reflection Is a Gift, Not a Guilt Trip
I know how easy it is to look back and instantly focus on what didn’t happen, the goals that fizzled, the unfinished projects, the mornings that started with “Jesus, take the wheel” and ended with “Everyone just go to bed!" at a decibel you would have rather not hit.
But reflection isn’t about judgment. It’s about gratitude.
It’s about celebrating what did happen, even if it looked nothing like your plan.
Maybe you grew in patience.
Maybe you learned to rest.
Maybe you simply made it through a hard season, and that’s worth honouring.
God doesn’t measure success by checklists; He measures it by heart shifts.... in being more transformed into His likeness.
So when you sit down to reflect, come with grace. Write your wins, your lessons, and the moments where God showed up quietly but powerfully. Sure, acknowledge your disappointments but may it be the fuel to the fire for what's ahead.
What a Faith-Based Reset Actually Looks Like
A true reset isn’t a productivity hack, it’s a heart posture.
Before you try to “fix” your life with a new planner or 20-step goal list, try this instead:
Take an hour to pray and reflect before setting goals.
Clear out the mental and emotional clutter, not just your inbox.
Ask God, “What are You asking me to release before the new year?”
When you pause to reset your soul before your schedule, you’ll find the clarity and energy you’ve been chasing in busyness.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:1
How to Make Reflection Simple (and Actually Enjoyable)
If you’re picturing a three-hour journaling marathon — stop right there. This doesn’t have to be complicated.
Here’s a simple rhythm that works even in the busiest season:
1. Set the scene.
Create a peaceful moment — light a candle, grab a drink, put on worship music, or sneak away for 30 minutes... I highly recommend you CREATE a space and time you can do this uninterrupted, lock yourself in the bathroom if necessary!
2. Ask better questions.
Instead of, “What went wrong?” ask:
What moments brought me joy this year?
What lessons am I carrying forward?
Where did I see God move?
What am I ready to release before the new year?
3. Write freely.
No overthinking. Just honesty. Let it be mess, it’s not for anyone else to read.
4. End with gratitude.
Write a short prayer thanking God for His faithfulness, even in the messy middle.
Realign for What’s Next
Once you’ve reflected and reset, you’re ready to realign your priorities.
Ask:
What matters most in 2026?
Where do I sense God calling me to focus my energy?
What am I ready to release to make space for new growth?
You don’t have to map it all out today. Just take the next faithful step — with peace as your guide.
So my parting advice....
Reset > Planner
I will always advocate reset and reflection before planning.
It’s the secret rhythm that carries you through every season, with God at the centre.
Because reflection isn’t a detour from progress, it is the path to it.
When you slow down, you don’t fall behind. You align.
