Before You Plan Next Year ,Start Here: A Faith-Led Guide to Reflect on 2025

Why We Rush Through the Year

a road in the countryside

If you’re anything like me, you blink and suddenly it’s November. The planner is still half full, the to-do list never ends, you forgot half the goals you even wrote down, and the thought of another year makes you want a nap.
It’s so easy to roll right into the next season without pausing, because slowing down feels like falling behind.

But what if not slowing down is what’s actually keeping you stuck?

Reflection isn’t about looking back in guilt. It’s about noticing God’s fingerprints, the ways He showed up in moments you might have missed while rushing.

When we pause, we create space for gratitude, perspective, and gentle course correction before running into the next thing.

The Power of Pausing with Purpose

God often speaks the loudest in our quietest moments. I have to be honest I will come with every excuse in the book to avoid a quiet moment.. I am not good at it! It makes me uncomfortable but I am also learning more and more the importance of some stillness (even if its just 3 minutes)

Yes God will and can speak whatever the circumstances but when we set aside time to be still, with a purpose and bring our questions to Him, sometimes its easier to hear.

Before we write new goals or resolutions, He invites us to stop and ask:

  • What has this year been about?

  • What have I learned?

  • What needs to be released?

Reflection helps us move forward intentionally, not reactively. It’s how we trade striving with clarity and gratitude for what’s next.

So here are 5 Reflection Questions to Ask Before the New Year.

Well really you can do this any time you want, January, February, a random Tuesday in July. The world kind of conditions us to pause as reflect when there is a new year on the horizon but you can do this at any time it works for you.

Here are some questions that might help you get started.

  1. Where did I see God move this last year: big or small?

  2. What lessons am I carrying into the next season?

  3. What am I ready to release or leave behind?

  4. What gave me peace or joy that I want more of?

  5. What’s one thing I’m grateful for right now?

Why not take 10 minutes, light a candle, and jot these down in your journal, you’ll be amazed how clarity starts to surface.
