The Areas of Life Reset: 8 Steps to Clear Your Mental Load

June 16, 20264 min read

I used to think I had a time management problem.

I would sit down on a Monday morning feeling behind before the week had even started. My brain was already running through unfinished tasks, things I needed to remember, conversations I needed to have, and all the little details that somehow only I seemed to know.

The frustrating part?

Most of the things on my mental list were not actually impossible. They just felt impossible because I was trying to carry them all at once.

That’s the hidden weight of the mental load. It’s not always the number of things you have to do. It’s the fact that your brain is working overtime trying to remember, organise, prioritise, and hold everything together.

This is where a brain dump can change everything.

Not because writing things down magically makes your responsibilities disappear. But because your brain was never designed to be your storage system.

When you get everything out of your head and onto paper, you create space to think clearly again. You can see what actually needs your attention, what can wait, and what you may be carrying that was never yours to hold.

A brain dump is one of the simplest ways I know to create a little breathing room before you plan your week.

In this post, I’ll show you how to do a brain dump that actually helps, including how to organise your thoughts across the different areas of life so you can move forward with more clarity and less overwhelm.

If your brain feels full and you’re craving a simpler way to reset your week, my free Weekly Rhythm Reset guide will walk you through the bigger picture: getting everything out of your head, deciding what matters, and creating a rhythm that supports your real life.

"The tasks weren't the problem. The invisibility was. Once I could see everything, I could actually deal with it."

1. Set a Timer for 10 Minutes

Write non-stop. Don't edit, organise, or judge. The timer creates containment so it doesn't feel endless.

2. Write Everything

EVERYTHING! Tasks, worries, ideas, random thoughts, not just the professional stuff. Everything that's been living rent-free in your head.

3. Don't Organise While You Dump

That comes later. Right now the only job is getting it out. Mixing work with home with personal is completely fine.

4. Use Prompts If You Get Stuck

What's been on my mind this week? What am I avoiding? What have I said I'll do but haven't? What do I keep forgetting?

5. Set the Scene

Put the phone in another room. Sit somewhere you won't be immediately interrupted. Give it the same focus you'd give anything else that matters.

6. Keep It Judgement-Free

This isn't the moment to critique what's on the list. Just get it out. Judgement comes later — and even then, go gently.

7. Scan for Quick Wins

Look for anything under two minutes, reply to that email, pay that bill. Do those now. That momentum is useful.

8. Sort by Areas of Life

Once it's out, group tasks under work, home, family, personal, and faith. This gives you a visual picture of where your load is heaviest, and whether your week is balanced across the areas of life that matter to you, or heavily weighted in one direction.

Seeing everything in front of you changes the way you approach your week.

You don’t have to solve everything immediately. You don’t have to make every decision today.

You simply need to stop carrying everything silently in your head.

The brain dump is one part of creating a weekly rhythm that actually supports you. It becomes even more powerful when paired with prayer, reflection, and intentional planning.

My free guide walks you through the simple process I use to reset my week with clarity, purpose, and God at the centre.

You don't have to solve everything today. You just have to see it. Visibility alone is a significant shift.

Your brain was never meant to carry every task, decision, responsibility, and reminder all at once.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is pause long enough to get clear.

Get it out of your head.

See it clearly.

Bring it to God.

Then decide what matters next.
